Regardless of your political stance, we can all agree that 2017 has been a tumultuous and unprecedented time in history. In periods of uncertainty, it is important to focus on goodness and embrace positivity.* While it may seem like there isn’t much else going on right now besides political debates, this list proves otherwise.
*Focusing on goodness doesn’t mean complacency!
Enjoy some of the moments that made me smile in 2017.
1. A record number of People of Color nominated for Academy Awards
The nominees for the 89th Academy Awards were announced on January 24. Not only was there a Person of Color (POC) nominated in every acting category, but we saw far more representation than ever before in other categories like Directing, Writing, and Choreography. Films like Moonlight, Fences, and Hidden Figures are expected to receive high critical acclaim. Historically, minority talent has been underrepresented at the awards show. Tune in on February 26 at 7pm EST to celebrate these achievements!
2. Beyonce is pregnant…with twins!
“We would like to share our love and happiness. We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two, and we thank you for your well wishes.” — The Carters
The BeyHive is swarming about Queen Bey’s Instagram announcement, which quickly became the most liked photo on the app—ever. The singer is expecting twins with her husband of 9 years, rapper and producer Jay-Z. Notorious for their privacy, the couple has not made any public appearances in several months. Beyoncé released additional photos on her website, including shots with her 5-year-old daughter and soon-to-be big sister Blue Ivy. Congrats, Bey!
3. This photo of POTUS Barack Obama windsurfing in the British Virgin Islands.
4. Russian firefighters saved 150+ pigs and piglets from a burning barn
5. Ben & Jerry’s releases 3 new flavors
6. Lady Gaga’s Superbowl half-time performance
The performer had big shoes to fill following two years of superb half-time shows (Beyoncé and Bruno Mars), and she delivered!
“It was a show of shiny costumes and big smiles, of a huge group of dancers all sharing the same moves, an outpouring of energy that was eager to please everybody.” — Jon Pareles, The New York Times.
Patriots and Falcons fans might not be on good terms, but we can all agree that we’re thankful for a new arsenal of memes. Miss the performance? Watch it here.
7. TEDxBU is only a month away!
